learning resources:
USB Class Drivers
Determining which class driver you need is not
always obvious. For example, the mass storage class driver
sounds like the main application is to talk to hard drives or
create hard drives. However, a common use of the mass storage
class driver on a device is to simply expose data from the
device to a desktop PC by allowing the PC to access the data
as if it was a normal hard drive. The actual media in the
device might be RAM, on-board FLASH, or an actual internal
hard drive.
It might be useful or necessary to review the
USB class driver specifications so you can best decide which
class driver will meet your application best. They are
available
here. The human interface (HID) class driver specification
is large and somewhat relatively complicated. There are many
different HID subsets that can be as specific as a car racing
simulator interface that defines steering wheels, pedals, and
crash shakes and bumps. There fore, the HID class driver has
a dedicated
web site.
USB Hardware
For host hardware, there have been three
evolutions of the standard over time. The earliest is
Universal Host Controller Interface (UHCI); information is
available
here. Then came Open Host Controller Interface (OHCI);
information is available
here. The latest hardware standard that supports USB 2.0
is the Enhanced Host Controller Interface (EHCI); information
is available
here.
